BIOGRAPHY

Carmen (Bourassa) Gonzalez was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada by her French Canadian parents.  Edmonton is still her home where she lives with her Chilean husband and their three children.  She works full time as a visual fine artist and is very active in the artist community.

Carmen grew up watching her artist mother paint and draw.  Due to her mother, her true love for art began at a young age.  In her teenage years, she became very passionate about drawing during her spare time.  However, after completing high school, her life took on a different path away from art.   Then, after a life changing experience in 2006, Carmen was guided back to pursue her dream of becoming an artist.  She began her artist career as a watercolourist while being a full time mother.  She improved her skills by taking several watercolour courses and was mentored by a well-known Edmonton watercolourist.  Within two years, she began exhibiting and selling her work.

In 2009, she enrolled in the Visual Fine Arts program at the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta.  She graduated in April 2013 with her Solo Exhibition.  During her studies, she discovered her style and her love for oils.  Carmen has a fun contemporary pop/realism style.  With oils being her primary medium, Carmen’s compositions are happy, playful, and nostalgic with the use of colour and patterns.

Carmen is a member of the Night of the Artists (NOA) and a Signature member with Society of Western Canadian Artists (SWCA).  As well, she is currently on the artist team for painting mural tiles for Mural Mosaic 150.  To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, Mural Mosaic began a project to create, design, and install huge mosaic murals all across Canada.  Each mural contains 100’s of small hand painted tiles.

ARTIST STATEMENT

“My inspiration comes from beautiful objects.  I love everything about objects - their shape, colour, and texture.  For me, the objects that we see all day long are my paintings.  Simple objects that hold meaning to us.  Even objects such as candy/food can stirs up strong memories.  Candy, for example, brings out the “inner child” within all of us.  Inspiration for my candy series came from being a mother of three children.  Every time I saw my children eating candy, certain candies would remind me of my childhood.  This guided me to create my candy paintings as I wanted to capture my childhood memories.

When I paint food, my goal is to stimulate the viewer’s senses of sight, taste, smell, and touch through realism and amplified colours.  I want them to “taste it with their eyes!”  As well, my objective is to bring out emotions such as excitement, comfort, or perhaps a touch of guilt or regret.

My newest works are my Vintage paintings.  For me, today’s modern objects do not have as much character to them.  Objects from the 50’s to the 80’s had so much charm and beauty to them.  While creating my vintage paintings, I added wallpaper patterns to the background to give the paintings that added vintage feel.

Patterns have become a big part of my style.  I absolutely love patterns.  I find myself intrigued by how patterns take your eyes and mind on a journey.  Each and every pattern inspires me and evoke emotions.  I enjoy spending hours designing my own patterns.  In combining my two passions of objects and patterns, I strive to create unique, bold, playful, and nostalgic compositions that make people smile and reminisce.”
